COACHING
Great coaching starts with clarity, consistency, and connection. Keep sessions simple, purposeful, and well-planned, focus on one or two key teaching points rather than trying to cover everything at once. Prioritise fundamentals, game understanding, and decision making, and create drills that are game like, competitive, and fun. Communicate clearly, demonstrate when possible, and provide specific, constructive feedback that builds confidence as well as skill. Set clear standards around effort, attitude, and teamwork, and model the behaviours you expect. Like the best programs a strong culture and attention to detail make the difference. Above all, remember that coaching, especially at junior club level is about developing people first and players second.
The under 8 First Step Program is designed to introduce young players to basketball in a fun, supportive, and development-focused environment. The program centres on building fundamental movement skills, basic ball handling, coordination, teamwork, and a love for the game through engaging, age-appropriate activities. For coaches, this section provides all season resources including session plans, weekly focus areas, drills, and key teaching points to ensure consistency across teams. The emphasis is on participation, confidence-building, and creating positive first experiences in basketball that set the foundation for long-term development.
